Dutch Oven Quick Pantry Sausages

This is a variation on one of my basic recipes.  At home you can cook it either on top of the stove, or in the oven at 350 degrees F.  You can also substitute 4 pork chops for the sausages.

                         Quick Pantry Sausages


  3        Tablespoons  butter
  2             pounds  kielbasa -- or bratwurst  
  2         16-oz-cans  tomatoes -- undrained
  1                cup  water*
                        salt & pepper -- to taste
  1         Tablespoon  caraway seeds -- optional but tasty
  1          16-oz-can  sauerkraut -- drained
  1           teaspoon  garlic powder -- optional

*the original recipe, and what I use at home calls for 1 cup beer or ale

Cook with 14 coals on top and 10 coals on the bottom of Dutch Oven

Melt butter and quickly brown sausage.  Do not overcook as you want them to be tender.  Remove from pot & slice up, return to pot.

Add tomatoes and their liquid, beer, salt & pepper, garlic powder and caraway seeds.

Cover pan & to cook for 25 minutes.

Add sauerkraut & continue to cook for another 10 to 15 minutes.
